Virginia Provo (Prevo) was in Belvidere in August of 1870 according to the 1870 census. It seems very likely that Clifton was Virginia (Provo) Lavene's child. No father was listed on the registration, and the notation "(Illigitimate)" (sic) was included. There is no one named Virginia Lavine/Lavene/Lavigne in Vermont in the 1880 census. He was the son of Virginia Provo.
