ACTIVITY #2Instant Messaging |
|---|
|
In this activity you'll learn about Instant Messaging (IM), how it might be useful to you, and how to avoid problems while using IM. Write down the answers for each of the questions in blue below.
1. What is Instant Messaging? IM is a tool that allows you to send text messages and files to other people via the Internet. That's the messaging part; IM is 'instant' because you only communicate with people who are on line (and using the same messaging tool) at the same time as you. (On the right is a screen shot of AOL Instant Messenger.) Question: What are two of the most common IM tools? To find the answer, click here.
2. How can IM be useful to you? Students sometimes use IM to collaborate on homework assignments. Some kids use IM to arrange social events, like trips to the mall or the movies. You can communicate with your friends using IM at times when meeting them in person is not possible, such during the evening on a school night. Question: Is it possible to carried away when using IM? Click to read about some potential problems.
3. How is communicating using IM different than talking in person? When you talk to others in person, you communicate with more than just words. Your facial expressions, body language and the different emphasis you put on words helps others understand your meaning. As you can probably imagine, you words on a screen can often be interpreted in different ways - and not always the way you intended! Say these words several times to yourself, but put emphasis on a different word each time: "That's not what I said." Question: What are some rules to follow when communicating on the Internet? Look for some suggestions here.
4. What other kind of problems should you try to avoid while using IM? In addition to the issues mentioned above, you need to practice safe computing while using IM. IM can be used to transmit files which can damage your computer: viruses and malware. Viruses are small programs that delete files or cause other mischief with your computer. You usually get viruses by downloading programs or clicking on links. Malware are programs that you install because they seem to be helpful, but can (intentionally) cause problems later. Question: What steps can you take to avoid viruses and malware? Click here for some recommendations.
5. Should I be concerned about my privacy when using IM? Good question - YES! Everything you type is going out over the Internet. Even if you're chatting with just one person, many others can read your profile or see if you're on line. Question: What steps should I take to protect my privacy while using IM? Find for some rules here. Also here.
Now that you know a little more about Instant Messaging, make sure to have a conversation with your parents before you begin using one of these tools (if you haven't talked with them already!)
